Ridge lines take more punishment than almost any other part of a tile roof. The problem
The original cement bedding under the ridge and hip capping tiles had cracked, crumbled and in places washed away completely. Once that mortar fails, rainwater no longer runs off along the ridge line — it seeps straight down into the roof timbers and ceiling below. Nearby parapet walls had also opened up with structural cracks, giving water a second way into the building alongside the failing ridges. Left unresolved, this combination of a compromised ridge line and cracked parapets leads to persistent leaks, ceiling damage and, eventually, more serious structural repairs.
The solution
The roof was tackled as a full SealPro ridge-repair and waterproofing system, worked through methodically section by section:
- Rake out and clean every cracked, loose or missing section of ridge mortar back to a sound edge, and clean down the exposed substrate.
- Rebuild the ridge bed with a fibre-reinforced cement to restore a solid, correctly shaped base for the capping tiles.
- Prime the repaired substrate with Penetrar so the waterproofing layer bonds permanently to both the mortar and the tile.
- Reinforce and waterproof the full ridge line with the StretchSeal membrane system, embedding reinforcement over every joint and finishing with a flexible HydroSeal HF topcoat that moves with the roof instead of cracking.
- Colour code the completed ridges to match the surrounding roof tiles, and seal the cracked parapet walls so no water can bypass the new ridge work.
Each phase was carried out under full quality control, with the crew moving section by section so the rest of the roof and the property below stayed protected throughout.
The result
The ridges now shed water the way they were designed to. What was a patchwork of crumbling mortar and open cracks is a continuous, flexible, waterproof line running the full length of the roof — sealed, reinforced and neatly colour matched to blend in from ground level.
